Seats on Row 13...Unlucky?....or very Lucky?

So we took our seats on British Airways row 13 and settled in for a 10-1/2 hour flight. They had the usual setup with video monitors in the headrests of the seats in the row in front of us and remote controls tethered to our armrests.  The remote controls were used to control the reading lights and the video monitors.  Only the tether, which supplied the electrical connection, was broken on Ron's remote control.  When he mentioned this to the flight attendant he was told that the video monitor was also a touchscreen so he could control it that way. But when he tried to set up the video monitor using the touchscreen it would only stay powered on for a few minutes and then go dark.  The flight attendant said that he would go to the master control panel and refresh Ron's screen.  He tried doing that three times over the course of a couple of hours.  But it still wouldn't work so Ron resigned himself to reading or sleeping. I decided to go to sleep, and then Ron decided to do the same when randomly his reading light decided to come on.  Remember how the remote control is used to control the lights?  And remember how Ron's remote control was broken?  That meant he couldn't turn his light off.

So about three hours into the flight the attendant came by and said they had other seats that we could move to.  We were hoping we might get bumped up to business class because we had seen empty seats up there ... but the flight attendant walked us right through business class and into 1st class!

There are five rows in 1st class and we were in row 5.  The seats face each other and each has a table-like footrest. The seats can be reclined in several different positions including a full recline bed position.  We were given big soft blankets and pillows and "goodie bags".  The "goodie bags" had a scented face wipe, spa facial cream, hand lotion, a travel toothbrush and toothpaste, sleeping socks, eye mask and earplugs. Would have liked to see what they were served for dinner in first class!

We were offered any beverage of our choice.  But since I was on heavy cold meds I decided to settle into the bed and sleep. Ron tried to sleep but even with a first class bed he wasn't able to doze off.  Did I mention he's the designated driver on this trip?  Uh oh.

Ron did enjoy a 1st class breakfast with fresh fruit, pastries, a smoothie, and a warm facial towel.  (I was still sleeping).  Anyway, it was a great surprise!

Here is the view of London while circling around Heathrow from a first class window.
